Concept Note

for the 7th Symposium on Surveillance-Response Systems Leading to Tropical Diseases Elimination

Global Outreach and Networking Promotion

Tropical Diseases, such as malaria and neglected tropical diseases, including schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, food-borne trematodiases, cysticercosis and echinococcosis, cause devastating health, social and economic consequences to more than one billion people globally. Adaptations need to be made to combat tropical diseases safely and effectively in disease endemic countries. With that, surveillance and response systems are the cornerstone that ensure the gathering of information for public health actions to implement global tropical diseases control programmes and achieve the United Nations Sustained Developing Goals (SDGs). Surveillance and response systems help to rapidly detect and respond to outbreaks or epidemics, providing timely interventions to block disease spread and minimize the impacts.

The Symposium on Surveillance-Response Systems Leading to Tropical Disease Elimination (SRS) is a biannual international conference co-sponsored by National Institute of Parasitic Diseases at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, and the World Health Organization, aimed at identifying, designing, implementing and evaluating tailored approaches to eliminate tropical diseases. Since its inception in 2012, six international symposia pertaining to surveillance-response systems on tropical diseases were successfully held in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China. This platform has provided opportunities for experts, researchers, policymakers, and international organizations to collaborate, discuss, and resolve challenges in the realm of tropical disease control. The history and development of these symposia can be summarized as follows: the 1st symposium laid the theoretical foundation for SRS, the 2nd symposium put forward SRS strategic planning for partners, the 3rd symposium initiated collaborative actions with partners from endemic countries, the 4th symposium shared milestone achievements on malaria and schistosomiasis in African countries, the 5th symposium and 6th symposium addressed adaptation and connectivity amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The theme of the 7th Symposium on Surveillance-Response Systems Leading to Tropical Disease Elimination (7th SRS) will be Global Outreach and Networking Promotion. The objective of this symposium is to further widen collaborative partnerships, strengthen networks, and bolster disease control efforts, with the following specific aims:

 To expand global partnerships and collaborations for effective disease control;

 To strengthen existing networks and foster new alliances to accelerate disease prevention;

 To share lessons for addressing obstacles and drive innovative solutions.
